So we no longer live in sunny CA. Within 3 weeks (actually 2 because Brett and I spent a week in Texas looking for a place to live) we packed up, shipped out, and moved to Mission, Texas.
We left on a Wednesday and averaged about 10 hours on the road each day to get here by Saturday, November 21st. Everyone we passed got a kick out of Tavin riding shot-gun in our moving truck!
With the help of some great guys from our ward (Bishop, 1st Counselor, and EQ Pres.) we got our truck unloaded. Ready to return our Penske rentals, someone, who will go nameless, hooked the trailor back up to the truck and we were off. We rounded the corner of our street, me following with our kiddos, when suddenly the trailor was swerving out of control back and forth, back and forth. It was hanging on by two little wires. I was honking my horn like a mad woman and flashing my brights, but the truck engine was too loud for Brett to hear me. Suddenly the trailor broke loose, flew across the street, launched off the curb, shattering concrete, and into a ditch!
Brett said it was like a moment off of Christmas Vacation as he saw in his side mirror, and then next to him, the trailor that should have been behind him, now passing him. Neighbors came out to see what the commotion was about. All I could think was and yes, we are your new neighbors. THANKFULLY we had insurance and roadside assistance came and towed the trailor out for us because the thing weighs like 1000 lbs. We laugh about it now!!!
We live 2 miles from the border and our subdevelopment is the last before the border...our street is the very last. It's a great community though, called Sharyland Plantation. It has lots of parks and 2 awesome pools, one with a water slide and another with a beach front entry and kid toys. I was very surprised when we first visited because it felt so much like Florida.
It's amazing what you get for the money here, esp. compared to California prices! It puts a little (very little) band-aid on the move far away from ALL family.

Anyone who knows me knows that I HATE bugs!!! Since this house sat empty for quite a while before we moved in, we were welcomed by MANY bugs, spiders and spider webs, numerous red ant hills, and even a mouse in the garage. Thankfully Brett caught the mouse!

I'm afraid to let the kids play outside because of the CraZy amount of red ants we have. I've already been bitten like 10 times just standing in the yard for a minute. Also, a lot of people have been having problems with ticks and chiggers. In our ward, one lady's 18 month old daughter went to the dr. for a bunch of huge red bumps and, oh, it was just chigger bites.
Because of the extreme heat and humidity, most homes use carpet as little as possible. Our home, for instance, is 100% tile. While I DREAD the never ending sweeping and mopping, my kids LOVE to cruise around on their bikes all day long!
Here are just a few interesting things I learned about our new hometown already:
**Birds definitely migrate south. Kirra's new favorite words are "tweet-tweet" because that's all we hear.

**I am a minority. That's an understatement. But I couldn't be surrounded by a nicer people!!!!!! While there's quite a language barrier, I live in the friendliest neighborhood EVER and have already made some really good friends. I don't think I could have done this move without Melissa Hunter, who I feel has been my best friend my whole life. Our husbands work for the same company and she's lived here for 8 months. She found my house; her kids are my kids age; she's made us dinner too many times; she went and saw New Moon with me even though she's never read the books; she came over one night just to hang out with me; she showed up at my door to help me unpack; etc.
**There are the COOLEST palm trees all around down here called Foxtail Palms. I LOVE THEM!
**There are 10 elders in our ward alone and that's about 80% of our ward. Just kidding.
**Don't go shopping on the weekends or it looks like this:
(I was trying to somewhat hide behind the batteries to try and take this as discretely as possible.)

Everyone crosses the border on the weekends and stocks up!!!!!!!!!!! This is no exaggeration! I'm actually bumbed. I went to Sam's Club today (Saturday) on purpose, just to get a picture for my blog. I didn't get their till around 5pm and the insanity had died down. The first day we got here I went to get a dryer (no gas down here, just electric) and it took me 20 minutes to get through the door. Once in, there were so many people I couldn't move my cart. So I left my cart where it was and walked out. Upon exiting I found a covered loading area where there was a huge line of cars, trucks, vans, and so on, loading up their vehicles with their carts full of stuff. The manager told us that this is the #1 Sam's in the nation.
**It's kind of a dangerous town because it's a border town (you know...drug trafficking, auto theft, abductions, and all that jazz), but we make sure to be careful.
**Mexicans are VeRY supersticious and I've been told they believe that if they see a blond haired child they must "pet" them or something bad will happen. I've also heard it's good luck. I don't know if that's for the child or the one doing the petting. At first it was a little bizarre, but now it's just hilarious. We seriously can't walk 10 steps before my children are pet, sometimes from the forehead to the chin and sometimes across their hair. Kirra seems to be the main target. Sometimes people will comment about how beautiful they are, others will wave their families over to look at my kiddos, and some will just pet and go right on about their business.
Brett (the worrier in our relationship) is worried about the kids getting sick with so much petting going on, so the other day I tried beanies to keep the petters at bay. Just kidding...it was just a cold day and I thought they looked cute in their hats.

**We still live fairly close to a beach! We are also in a hurricane zone.
We are finally settled in, every box unpacked, and even decorated for Christmas. Since I am now a "single mother," I even hung the Christmas lights myself. (Just don't ask how many hours it took me.)
Although we couldn't be with my family for Thanksgiving and won't be with Brett's for Christmas, we did have an AMAZING Thanksgiving dinner with our new life-long friends the Hunters.
Brett is working, and working hard, at his new facility. His company just bought 3 buildings down here and Brett is the administrator at the Mcallen Bldg. We rarely see him because of the hours he has to put in during this trasition period, but look forward to when the 100 days of 100 hours a week comes to an end. Hopefully things will calm down for him by then.
Brett's new home. The beautiful Grand Terrace Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center (long term healthcare, aka: an old folks home).
We really are excited for this new ADvEntURe in our lives!

Well look at you go. Packed up, moved states, unpacked, lights hung all by yourself!! You go girl. I am tired after just reading all that you've been up to. Best of luck to your family in Texas. The house looks beautiful. I can't believe how lived in and decorated you already have it. Keep us posted on life in Texas ya'll!!
I couldn't have asked for a more complete and detailed description of what your new life is like. If everyone would blog like you...! Wow! Your house looks beautiful, the kids seem happy, and you are a trooper! Glad you made it safe and sound. Let's plan a time to meet in San Antonio!
Great post, Melissa. You answered all the questions I would have asked if we were really talking. I bet you'll have a good time in Texas. It sounds like you are already making good friends. Sometimes being on your own is a lot of fun and certainly cements your relationship with your spouse.
What is Bret doing for work?
Hooray! I'm so glad that you updated! Your house is beautiful. I'm so glad that you've found a great friend... they make all the difference when you're away from family. And I love the petting story... my mom told me that when we lived in Texas when I was born she was always so nervous about people petting me. I'm sad that you're so far south though! Maybe we'll have to meet halfway sometime!
Whew. I need to cath mybreath after reading this. What a super woman u are. Reminds me of me once long ago! Good luck and be careful. Do u know any spanish? Well I just saw your mom and dad at our stake play. See you at the wedding and enjoy your new home. Love linda
How fun! It might not seem like it now but you guys are starting a great adventure! I love the house! When we lived in Puerto Rico people were always petting Seth and Tanner. Then they would always tell me that I was extremely blessed. I hope you have a great time. SOunds like a great friend that you made...keep her! Oh yeah, chiggers and tics aren't as bad as people think! Sounds weird but growing up in MO chiggers were horrible and you just put clear finger nail polish over the bumps and it kills them. Also, we get tics bad here in ID and just make sure you do tic checks and if you need to know how to get them out call! :) Tell Brett hi and give the kiddos kisses!
I really have been wondering if you were in Texas or what.
I can't get over how much that house in looks like our rental in Texas. Like exactly.
The bugs are HORRIBLE! As are the creatures. Toads, lizards, turtles, geckos. YUCK! And the fire ants really are scary with your kids. I got nervous with my kids outside, too.
Right across the border and hurricane zones would make me a bit nervous. But you sounds like a trooper.
I love the story about everyone petting your kids. That will get old fast.
What a blessing to have an instant friend. Good thing you guys click so well.
Despite some of the challenges, it sounds like you guys are doing really well...this is a good move for you I'm sure.
Nice work on the Christmas lights.
I am rollong on the ground laughing. I miss you so much. The whole trailor in the ditch is way to much. The whole petting thing, I'm with Brett, CREEPY! You better carry around a jug of hand sanitizer! Your lights look awesome too. Give little Tav man and Kirra Rae big big hugs and kisses! We miss them so much.

Wow! You are a super woman! I can't believe you've done all of that in so little time! I mean, hanging Christmas lights? Amazing. I watched Jake hang ours! What is Brett doing for work? Enjoy your beautiful home, new friends and adventure and keep your cute family healthy (bugs, eww) and safe (no more trailers for a while ;), petting, really? Interesting. You are blessed!) Have fun in Texas!
Melissa, welcome to Texas! Your Texas sounds completely different than my Texas though. We do have the red ants in common. Those little buggers are the worst. Have Brett spray the yard, and keep a can of Raid on hand for when an ant hill pops up. Trevor has scars on his foot from our first encounter with them. I hope you have a good time there. Your house looks pretty. I wish you lived a little closer so that we could get together.
I can't explain how much I LOVED this post! You are hilarious. I am just picturing you saying all of these comments. I loved that you had a traffic "accident" with the trailer. That is totally something that would happen to us. And I am so sad that you guys live so far away, but maybe you can make it to the Marcum reunion in 2010?
We've been wondering where you were :) Good luck with everything!
holy cow melissa! i had no idea you were gone! and look how you are already unpacked, moved in, lights up! you rock, seriously. your house looks beautiful! your kids look so cute in the beanies. and i also love that palm tree! i've never seen it before, but i have to show jason. he's obsessed with palm trees.
i wish you luck there in mexico... i mean texas! have fun and merry christmas!
Okay, chiggers...put clear nail polish on the bumps--that'll get 'em right out! Save yourself ten minutes each day by forgoing fixing your hair--100% humidity is a joke! Mexicans touching your kids' heads--yeah, I got nothing. Claim they have scabies or something? I think you're doing a good job with the hats, though! How long you living in Texico?
LOL, that trailer story is hilarious and oh so Christmas Vacation! Good luck with the unpacking and getting things organized. So how far away is Carly? Love the kids on the tile! That's so what Carson would do.
Crazy that you're now in Texas. Sounds exciting. And I have to say you're the fastest unpacker/ mover I'ver every known. And I can't believe you even got Christmas lights up and pictures hanging on your walls. Your home looks really nice!!
What an adventure!! I love all the stories. The trailer story and your kids getting pet by the Mexicans is the best. Too funny. You are amazing I don't know how you do it. My family told me that you had moved and you are already unpacked, situated and making friends. I know what it is like to be far from home without a husband. I am so glad you have someone who understands what you are going through. I am sad that you are not in Cali anymore so I can see you when I come home. But I am excited because you will be there for Jeff's wedding. We will be home this year too. We will have to get together. You are great. Keep us posted on all your adventures.
So that was quick! We just hung out with you at the beach--what--a month ago?! But congrats! Your house looks beautiful! The trailer, the bugs and the petting parts were cracking me up! You'll have to keep us all posted on your new adventures!
We miss you, Meliss and Brett! I'm so glad you're settled into your new home. I know what it's like to be a "single mother" sometimes...hang in there. We can't wait to see you at Christmastime. Will you bring us some chiggers? I've never seen one :).
Wow, looks great! Matt served his mission in the McAllen mission, so he knows the area well. He's talked about going back, maybe we'll have to come for a visit sometime.:)
