South Texas does not have a DMV. Weird.
Instead we have Texas Department of Public Safety (for drivers license) and Hidalgo County Automobile Department (for license plates).
Dumb!! that you have to go to 2 places.
Shady things took place at both and let me just remind you that I live 2 miles from the border.
My kids and I set out to get the cars registered and me a TX drivers license.
At HCAD things went pretty quickly so we continued on over to TDPS.
Two hour wait..that was doable. The kids would just nap an hour later than usual. We could handle that.
3 hours later, my bag full of snacks, GONE, toys all played out, bumbs numb from being strapped in the stroller, my kids were restless and tired.

4 hours passed and TDPS had only gone through 20 numbers.
I still had 40 more till they got to me.
At 4 1/2 hours my kids lost it, but I had already invested so much time.
Kirra was SCREAMING!!!
Workers decided to sneak us to the front of the line.
Handed over all of my papers only to be told I didn't have the right documents.
WHAT?
When you arrive, the front desk person checks to make sure you have the correct documents before giving you a number.
FURIOUS!!!
I'm told I have to come back.
I'm given a "front of the line" pass, written on a post-it note.
Two days later we return. Brett meets us there to cut to the front with us.
Only 5 people in front of us after turning in our "front of the line" pass.
NO JOKE! 3 hours later we leave the TDPS.
3 weeks later, a week after Brett's came, I get my license, along with this note.

Are you kidding me?
I laughed hysterically!
Why didn't they just reprint it?????
Instead I'm supposed to carry this note around with me?
It's all because their printer printed my DOB multi-colored.
Normally I could care less, but I live in Mexas!!!
*Just found out someone is using their dead aunts social as their own and will not respond to anything (even by family) but their dead aunts name.
*My friend had her social security card in her wallet after going to the TDPS. A store cashier saw it and told her she should not carry it around down here. My friend explained she had just come from TDPS where she had to show it. The cashier was adamant you did not need your SS card to get your license. She hadn't needed one.
*I was NOT asked to show proof of insurance at HCAD. When we were finished I asked the worker if she had forgotten I hadn't shown it to her. She claimed we weren't done and was just going to ask to see it.

I remember thinking that process in Texas was RIDICULOUS. I just got rid of my Texas plates yesterday. I wasn't going to pay to register my car until it expired. The Ohio process goes so smoothly in comparison.
I remember the same type "system" in NM. Once with my dad in line with me...had brought me a car (to trade me for my Opel GT since I had kids and needed a bigger car! boo hoo!) After a couple of hours in line, we got to the counter to find out he needed a sales receipt. Went outside, wrote it up....and sold it to me for $1. Same lousy service, different state.
We lived in El Centro Calif for a while. El Centro is also on the border. Unfortunately, I can relate to everything you're saying. Just wait until summer when the cockroaches come out...in droves! The good part of living on the border is going across the border. Man oh man, you can find bargains galore (if you dare cross the border).
oh my, sounds worse than the DMV! how can that be?
i'm sorry about that experience. it seriously sounds horrible! especially with screaming kids. i feel your pain!
How dumb!! They do the same thing in UT, where you go to one place for the license and another for the plates. I think they have meetings to ensure that everyone's experience at the Motor Vehicle Division offices are horrible!! I HATE going to them. Poor Melissa! Sounds like the kids did the best they could for 3 hours! I would be crying too :)
i hate the government... and obama wants to do this to our healthcare too.... dont get me started.
You poor thing! What a nightmare!! Why don't they make these procedures simple? Your poor kids too. Sounds like they were troopers though.
Gotta love the government!!! I was cracking up at the stickers on Tavin though....your experiences in Mexas are indeed great ones to laugh at FOREVER!
I like the funky eyeball stickers picture! Sure sounds a bit fishy there and not at all efficient. Why oh why is it so? I have to say that I don't like going multiple places in UT for the license and plates but it was a breeze to get plates last year and I wish it could be that way at all DMV's. Umm, the SS card thing...whoa. I used to carry mine and then got wise. Too bad so many strange things happen. And the note you got? Strange. Better luck if you have to go through that again. Especially with the kids.
I can't believe you had to wait that long, but I will admit this post made me laugh so hard!! Ha ha you may wanna hot glue that note to your wallet so you'll have it at all times :)
I think I would have cried!!!
Hey Melissa,
We used a company called ABF U-Pack. What they do is they drop off the back end of a semi truck at your home. You pack up your own stuff and then put up a wooden barrier (that they provide). They then charge you by the linear foot. We moved all of our house in 13 linear feet. Then they drive it and deliver it to your new home and come back to pick it up when you are finished. It is a really cool service. We found that it was cheaper than any rental truck once you added in gas prices. It sure took a lot of stress out of moving. I think we paid about $1100. We also shipped my car out on a car trailer and they moved it here for about $550. Not bad in both cases considering the distance that we moved. If you need any more info give me a call. 817-431-9532
